Extras.

Our piece begins with everyone outside the rear entrance of the church with Joe, Dave and Stevie banging on the doors begging to be let in. As soon as the door opens we decided to wanted frantic and panicked atmosphere to make the audience feel on edge, as though they are part of our performance and make it feel like the riots are still taking place. In order to create this strongly we needed a some extra people to take on characters and interact with the audience, we all sat down together and discussed what people we wanted and what characters could be seen. We took people from Year 10 upwards as we wanted to make sure that  we had people who were used to taking on a character and maintaining it. Here is a picture of what we came up with:

We wanted to make sure we had a contrast of characters that varied from gender, age and occupation. We decided to use the 'Single man' as a leader figure as Chris has had a lot of experience with Promenade performances and thought he would be the best man to lead all of the audience around.
Secondly, we all decided very early that we would want a doctor within the piece as there would be a lot of injured people due to the riots and asking audience members whether they needed medical help with involve them more as well.
The rest of the characters you can see on our list were all discussed within our group and there was a lot of moving people around because a lot of us imagined certain people as certain characters. However, we managed to come up with a final decision and hopefully each and person will be able to take part and be able to gain a different experience within performing.

  1. This was a really strong piece of planning. I'm glad that you all really considered what you wanted your "extras" to do and the characters you need them to be. Make sure that you divide up the briefing so that we make most use of the rehearsal time at the venue.
